Your Video Guide to Custom Kernels using Redmi Note 4 (Mido)
Following at least two direct requests on my YouTube channel for a video on custom kernels for Redmi Note 4 (Mido), I decided to research the topic and provide a video guide with the narrative outlined below for anyone to translate to his or her primary language:-
"Welcome to this guide on Custom Kernels for Redmi Note 4 (Mido).
This guide is aimed to help you discover and install whatever is best for your device.
What is a kernel?
This is 'the heart' of your device's operating system.
There are two types of kernels, the stock kernel and the custom kernel which can be likened to 'the original heart' and 'the replacement heart' respectively.
Whenever there are problems concerning the performance and/or battery life of the stock or custom ROM installed on your device, there are two possible solutions.
The first solution which is employed by advanced users is to manipulate the stock kernel pre-installed with the ROM using application tools such as 'Kernel Auditor'. This is like performing a heart operation involving a surgical procedure to help the original heart function properly.
The second solution which is the focus of this guide is to install or flash a custom kernel. This is like a heart operation involving a heart transplant.
How can you find a custom kernel for your device?
Of course you most likely have access to the worldwide web. But you can narrow your search to sites/apps such as XDA, 4PDA and Telegram.
Once you find a custom kernel, make sure that it is meant not just for your device but also for the type of ROM installed and the Android version on which it is based. For example, Redmi Note 4 (Mido) has a stock ROM which has a MIUI skin based on Android 7 (Nougat). Thanks to a huge army of different developers from all over the world there are so many custom ROMs based on Android 7 (Nougat), Android 8 (Oreo) and Android 9 (Pie) having various skins such as MIUI, Lineage or AOSP. Therefore you have to make sure that the custom kernel fully matches the stock or custom ROM installed on your device. You will find this information in the first page of the post which states the features and compatibility of the custom kernel.
On the same page you will also find a guide on how to install or flash the custom kernel. Please make sure you strictly follow the simple instructions using the recommended Custom Recovery, after making a backup of your current ROM just in case something goes wrong!
Once you have flashed it and rebooted to 'System' you can now hopefully experience a better battery life and performance of your ROM.
If you are interested in performing the benchmarks of before and after the installation you can visit your app store such as Google PlayStore so as to seek, download and install the relevant app such as PCMark for Android for that purpose! You can save the results and share them with friends and relatives who have the same device so as to personally promote your new discovery.
That is all for now. I sincerely hope that this guide motivates you to boldly take this simple series of steps full of discovery and adventure. And you fail...keep on trying...and you will succeed to become 'the custom kernel guide' to others!!!
Finally you may be hoping to get a list of recommended best custom kernels but if that is offered to you then you are being robbed of all the fun and challenges that make the adventure that could be yours by simply following this guide on your own!!!"
